Administering OUs and migrating workstations to RAD

Creating Groups

Now that you have your ADM / Elevated Accounts you may require additional Groups and will need to add members to the new group you will create.

  1. Launch Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. Locate your department OU or the OU within your department where you want to add the group. Should be located under rad.rutgers.edu/Delegated/(YOUR DEPT OU).

  3. Right click on the OU and choose New > Group.

  4. Name the group based on the naming convention found in Rad Naming Conventions.

  5. Leave Group Scope and Group Type with default settings and click OK.

Adding Members to Groups

You will need to add members to the new group you will create. If you are already in the OU where the group is then please proceed with the following steps. If not then Launch ADUC and locate the OU and Group.

  1. Right Click on the group that you want to add Members to and choose Properties.

  2. Click on the Members tab > Add...

  3. Choose the users and or groups you want to add within this group.

    Select Users, Contacts, Computers, Service Accounts, or Groups window.

  4. Click OK and that will bring you back to the Members tab.

  5. Click OK again this will close out Group Properties window and the users and groups will be added.

Creating Additional Group Policies

EI applies certain default polices to every OU, but you may require additional GP’s to fulfill your security and mapping needs.

  1. Launch Group Policy Management and locate your OU that you manage.
  2. Right click on the OU and select Create a GPO in this Domain, and Link it here…

  3. Name the Group Policy accordingly and click OK.

  4. Right click the GPO you just created and choose Edit. The Group Policy Management Editor will pop up.

  5. In here choose the policies you require either Computer or User based.
  6. Once completed close Group Policy Management Editor and close Group Policy Management.

Migrating your workstation to the RAD domain

Before you begin you must understand and verify the following:

  1. PC object must exist in the correct OU before Migrating the PC and the PC name must match the PC name in AD. See Creating Computer Accounts in AD section for further information.
  2. Click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System.
  3. On the right hand side under "Computer name, domains and workgroup settings" click on Change Settings.

  4. In System Properties click Change… and change the computer name to the RAD specified computer name and add computer to workgroup.
  5. Reboot and log in as the local admin account.
  6. Repeat Steps 3 and 4.
  7. Click Change and add the workstation to RAD.RUTGERS.EDU.
  8. Reboot and login with your RAD account.
  9. Confirm that DNS is pointing to 128.6.1.1.
