This Document was designed to help assist in the transition to RAD and to assist in Administering your OU

Creating Organizational Units (OU)

Once you have been on boarded with an ADM / Elevated Account you may require additional OU’s to better suite your Department’s needs. Here are the steps to create additional OU’s within your initial OU setup.

  1. Launch Active Directory Users and Computers
  2. Locate your department OU located under rad.rutgers.edu/Delegated/(YOUR DEPT OU)
  3. Right click your OU and choose NEW then choose Organizational Unit
  4. Name it accordingly Check the Protect container from Accidental Deletion and click OK
  5. Done


Creating Computer Accounts in AD
Before Migrating a machine to RAD, the PC object with the corresponding name must exist within the proper OU.

  1. Launch Active Directory Users and Computers
  2. Locate your department OU or the OU within your department where you want to add the group. Should be located under rad.rutgers.edu/Delegated/(YOUR DEPT OU)
  3. Right click on the OU and choose New > Computer
  4. Under New Object- Computer add the appropriate Computer name and make sure you change the User or Group from Default: Domain Admins to your Workstation Admin group.
  5. Click OK and you are ready to migrate the Computer.


Creating Groups
Now that you have your ADM / Elevated Accounts you may require additional Groups and will need to add members to the new group you will create.

  1. Launch Active Directory Users and Computers
  2. Locate your department OU or the OU within your department where you want to add the group. Should be located under rad.rutgers.edu/Delegated/(YOUR DEPT OU)
  3. Right click on the OU and choose NEW and choose Group
  4. Name the group based on the Naming convention found in (XXDOCMENT NAMEXX)
  5. Leave Group Scope and Group Type with default settings and click OK
  6. Done


Adding Members to Groups
You will need to add members to the new group you will create. If you are already in the OU where the group is then please proceed with the following steps. If not then Launch ADUC and locate the OU and Group.

  1. Right Click on the group that you want to add Members to and choose Properties
  2. Click on the Members tab
  3. Click Add…
  4. Choose the users and or groups you want to add within this group
  5. Click Ok and that will bring you back to the Members tab
  6. Click OK again this will close out Group Properties window and the users and groups will be added.
  7. Done


Creating Additional Group Polices
EI applies certain default polices to every OU, but you may require additional GP’s to fulfill your security and mapping needs.

  1. Launch Group Policy Management
  2. Locate your OU that you manage
  3. Right Click on the OU
  4. Choose Create a GPO in this Domain, and Link it here…
  5. Name the Group Policy accordingly and click OK
  6. Right Click the GPO you just created and choose Edit
  7. Group Policy Management Editor will pop up.
  8. In here choose the policies you require either Computer or User based.
  9. Close Group Policy Management Editor
  10. Close Group Policy Management
  11. Done


Migrating your workstation to the RAD domain:

Before you begin you must understand and verify the following:

  • Workstation OS must be at the Minimum Windows 7 or higher
  • Enterprise KACE will be installed on each workstation via Group Policy
    • KACE can be managed by your Admins or KACE can be managed by OIT
  • Local Administrator account of your workstation on hand.
    • This is required when you unjoin your workstation in the steps below


Migrating your machine

  1. PC object must exist in the correct OU before Migrating the PC (See Creating Computer Accounts in AD)
  2. PC name must match the PC name in AD
  3. Click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System
  4. On the right hand side under Computer name, domains and workgroup settings click on Change Settings
  5. In System Properties Click “Change…” and change the computer name to the RAD specified computer name and add computer to workgroup.
  6. Reboot and log in as the local admin account.
  7. Repeat Steps 3 and 4
  8. Click “Change…” and add the workstation to RAD.RUTGERS.EDU
  9. Reboot and login with your RAD account.
  10. Confirm that DNS is pointing to 128.6.1.1
